Yea we know they say “moderation” is key to any alcohol related “benefits”, but hey at least you can feel good about that first bucket of long necks!

Beer Can Help Keep You Hydrated

Researchers at Granada University in Spain say that beer beats water when it comes to hydration. Subjects ran on a treadmill in 104-degree temps until they couldn’t take it anymore, then their hydration levels, motor skills, and ability to concentrate were measured. Half of the runners were given two half pints of Spanish lager while the other half were given water. The beer drinkers scored slightly better as a result that’s attributed to sugars salts, and bubbles in the beer enhancing the body’s ability to soak up water. As a bonus, the carbohydrates replaced the calories they just sweated out. Now you can feel better about hitting the sauce after that Friday or Saturday workout!

Beer as a Brain Beverage

A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that moderate drinking may be associated with better brain function. Women who consumed up to two drinks a day scored 20 percent higher on a cognitive functioning test than those who had less than one drink.

Beer May Prevent Osteoporosis

Researchers have found that beer can contain enough silicon to benefit bone health. Opt for Ales and Pale Ales, which have higher levels of the bone-bolstering silicon than darker varieties.

Beer May Lower Risk of Heart Disease

A number of studies have shown that moderate consumption of alcohol and beer may lower your risk of heart disease.

Beer Hops May Lower Cholesterol

Research has found that hops, the bitter flavor that balances out the sweetness of beer, is a great source of polyphenols, which lower bad cholesterol, fight cancer, and give your immune system a boost. In moderation, the polyphenols in beer may have a positive effect on HDL and LDL.

Started in 1964, this event was named after Charlie Saikley the “Godfather of Beach Volleyball” who passed away in 2005. This party/tournament which spans basically all weekend, draws thousands of partiers and amateur and professional volleyball players. Pictures cannot do this event/weekend justice and it’s not hard to argue that this is one of if not the best weekend of summer! This year, Six-Man is the last weekend in July so the big day will be Saturday July 31st while the championship will held on Sunday August 1st.

2010 Six-Man Facebook Event Invite

Despite all the discussion about the city cracking down heavily on the event this year, it will still go on and will still be a raging time. Just be smart! To get yourself ready, make sure to hit up “Club Vons” on Manhattan Beach Blvd to stock up on weekend necessities, this place is packed all weekend with healthy amounts of babes and booze.

Another spot that should be frequented all weekend is Manhattan Pizzeria. This pizza joint has awesome pizza, great deals on pitchers of beer and is going to be busy all weekend for good reason. The two words “large pepperoni” will become synonymous to the tunes of “Sweet Caroline” and “Magnum P.I.” all weekend. They are located across from Shellback Tavern down at the end of

Renamed in 1973 to Shellback Tavern, this bar is the classic corner-local-surfer bar that reminds you of old Manhattan. Like MB Pizza and Beaches (another great bar during the day) across the street, Shellback is a must visit during the Six-Man weekend. Have fun this year!

2010 Official Six-Man Details

Check out some of the details below for 2010. This year is a little different than years past because of the push to make it more controllable. Aside from player entry fees being increased, there have been “significant” measures implemented again in order to try and control drinking on and around the beach. Expect enforcement to bulk their efforts this year so take an extra moment to think about how and what your packing for the beach.

Team Check-In

Teams will be allowed to check in for set up on Friday at the base of the Pier from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday beginning at 6 a.m. All teams are to check in with the Tournament Director before 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, regardless of weather.

2010 Six-Man Guidelines

Any goods brought into the tournament area are subject to inspection (i.e. coolers, bags, backpacks, etc.)

Teams are subject to disqualification from this tournament and possible future tournaments for inappropriate player behavior (i.e. BRINGING OR ALLOWING ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES in your assigned tent area, fighting, arguing with referees/players, pulling nets, disobeying a lawful order by an event Police Officer, L.A. County Life Guard, Security Officer and/or City Official or any other behavior deemed unacceptable by the Tournament Director). Teams who violate these rules/guidelines will be banned from the event for 5 years.

ALCOHOL WILL BE PROHIBITED AND STRICTLY ENFORCED YOU WILL BE CITED IF YOU BRING ALCOHOL TO THIS EVENT (up to $600 MC 4.48.030)

With London shutting out Slovenia 1-0, USA was forced to win in order to advance. Landon Donovan’s late heroics and 1-0 win over Algeria puts USA at the top of their group at the World Cup for the first time since 1930, leading Group C with five points. England also moves on with five points, but with a fewer goal differential after their 1-0 win over Slovenia at Port Elizabeth.

Donovan slotted in the rebound after Algeria goalkeeper Rais Bolhi had stopped Clint Dempsey’s shot from close range in the first minute of injury time. It was his fourth World Cup goal, equaling Bert Patenaude’s U.S. record.

“I’m shocked. I’m so proud of our guys. Unbelievable,” Donovan said. “Clint made a good run in the middle, the ball fell to me …. time kind of stopped. You can’t miss from there.”

Both teams had chances but failed to score during regulation time. Dempsey’s goal was disallowed for offside in the first half and hit the post in the second. TV replays appeared to show Dempsey to be onside when he tapped into the net from close range after being fed by Herculez Gomez in the 21st minute. He hit the post in the 57th and missed the rebound. Even with all the frustration, the American’s kept their focus and kept pushing.

As the final whistle sounded, the U.S. bench raced onto the field and piled on top of the players on the far sideline.Donovan said he’d never despaired, even when the Americans hadn’t been able to convert chances in regulation time.

“We believe man. We’re alive!” said Donovan, in tears at times after the match.

Coach Bob Bradley said his U.S. team had to take risks, pushing hard for a goal to secure the win and making for a wide open game.

“We’re proud,” he said. “We finished first in our group. Five points. Didn’t lose a match. So we’re ready.

Algeria, which has never advanced beyond the group phase in a World Cup, finished with one point from its draw with England. The Americans held England to a 1-1 draw and staged a dramatic comeback from two goals down to level at 2-2 with Slovenia in its previous matches.

Purple Haze is a crisp, American style wheat beer with raspberry puree added after filtration. Therefore, you may see raspberry pulp in the beer. The raspberries provide the lager with a subtle purple coloration and haze, a fruity aroma, and a tartly sweet taste.

This beer is best served with salads or light fruit desserts, such as soufflés or chiffon cakes. Many people enjoy it with chocolate desserts. Purple Haze pairs well with certain cheeses, such as ripened Brie or any dessert made with Mascarpone. It’s also great paired with entrees prepared with fruit, especially citrus. Consider enjoying Purple Haze alone at the end of your meal as dessert.

Mexico – Cucapa Brewing Co.
Cerveceria de Baja California is located in the City of Mexicali, and is one of the handful of Mexican Microbrews. The product they brew is Cucapá Beer. This name comes from one of the five Indian tribes that live in the Mexicali Valley. The Cucapá tribe was the first settlers of the region and the love for water and nature took them to live in the delta of the Colorado River.

The tradition of nature, the water of the river, the geographical location and the initiative of being the first people to explore the region is what makes Cerveza Cucapá as unique as their ancestors.

A crisp beer with a hint of citrus, made with two-row malted barley, unmatled wheat, a secret blend on Humboldt herbs, crystal clear mountain water and ale yeast. Lost Coast Brewery is an American microbrewery located in the city of Eureka in Humboldt County, California. The eight microbrews it produces are based on research of English beers carried out by founders Barbara Groom and Wendy Pound. Lost Coast is brewing eight beers, including six seasonal beers all influenced by Groom’s and Pound’s research of English microbrews. They include Downtown Brown, Great White AlleyCat Amber, 8-Ball Stout, Indica India Pale Ale, Lost Coast Pale Ale, Raspberry Brown and Tangerine Wheat.

Named for the delicate engravings popularized by 19th century seafarers, Scrimshaw is a fresh tasting Pilsner brewed in the finest European tradition using Munich malt and, Hallertauer and Tettnang hops. Scrimshaw has a subtle hop character, a crisp, clean palate, and a dry finish.

In addition to Red Seal Ale, Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout, Scrimshaw Pilsner, and other fine North Coast brands, the brewery has resurrected the old Acme label with a heritage dating back to the San Francisco of the 1860’s.

5.6% -Summer Solstice – Boonville CA – Anderson Valley Brewing Co.
This copper colored ale is smooth, malty, and lightly sweet, with a delicate hint of spice for that has an extra velvety flavor. The character is lighter in body than its cousin, the Winter Solstice Seasonal Ale.

This is a silky, creamy dream, perfect as a warm weather beer. Anderson Valley Brewing Company, founded in 1987, is a regional brewery in Boonville, Mendocino County, California and brews include Boont Amber Ale, Hop Ottin’ India Pale Ale, and Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout.

6.7% – Grimbergen Blonde – Belgium
The first-rate raw materials constitute the riches of this blonde high-fermentation beer. It has a light fruit taste and there is a good balance between sweet and bitter and a full, rounded flavor.

The characteristic bready, fruity complexity of this beer combined with its mellow, rounded finish make it an exceptional pairing for steamed, marinated mussels, grilled lobster tail, and gamier meats such as venison or wild boar.

The Twisted Limbs were founded in a cramped basement studio apartment in Westwood, while Ryan Groves and Ben Shea were attending UCLA. They were originally called “Big Pianist and the G-Strings… and Ben”, and played their very first show in front of 5,000 people at the UCLA talent show Spring Sing. The show coordinators decided to close up the talent show with Big Pianist and the G-Strings… and Ben’s powerful piano-centered Rock. The whole crowd was on their feet by the end of the song, screaming for more.

Since then, the band has a new name as well as a few different members. The original bassist, Trey Shelton, and the guitarist, Blake Gearheard, moved away to pursue other ventures. Luckily, a mutual friend of Ben and Ryan’s, Charles Brandick, was a bassist phenom and grooved well with them both. The Twisted Limbs was born.

The Twisted Limbs released their debut album Cherry in September of 2009. One of the musicians who laid down some sax tracks on the album, Eric Hargett ended up digging the vibe of The Twisted Limbs, and joined the band late in the game. Be sure to check out Ryan Groves Lead Vocals, Guitar & Keyboard, Charles, Brandick Bass & Backup Vocals, Ben Shea on Drums & Eric Hargett on the Sax.

You can catch one of their shows around Los Angeles or visit The Twisted Limbs Website. May 3rds lineup includes Mighty Kate, Wires In The Wall, Freakish Blue, The Twisted Limbs, see you there!

COPENHAGEN, AP – A mass of Carlsberg workers walked off their jobs in protest Thursday after Carsberg, a Danish brewer, tightened laid-back rules on workplace drinking. According to a Carlsberg spokesman, beer coolers were also removed from work sites.

This obviouslly has not settled well for warehouse and production workers in Denmark who are now rebelling against the company’s new alcohol policy. It allows them to drink beer only during lunch hours in the canteen. Prior to this, workers could help themselves to Carlsberg beer throughout the day from coolers placed around the work sites.

The only restriction accoding to company spokesman Jens Bekke was..

“that you could not be drunk at work. It was up to each and everyone to be responsible,”

Carlsberg had mulled a stricter drinking policy for years and finally decided to impose the new rules on April 1, 2010 which has prompted all the protests.

Bekke said around 800 workers went on strike Wednesday and around 250 walked off their jobs Thursday, resulting in interruptions to beer transports in and around Copenhagen.

Carlsberg’s truck drivers joined the strike in sympathy even though they are exempt from the new rules, Bekke said. The truck drivers are permitted to bring three beers from the canteen because they often don’t have time to have lunch there.

As a saftey precaution, the trucks are fitted with alcohol ignition locks which prevent the drivers from driving drunk.
